mapHo Chi Minh City formerly named Saigon, is divided into 19 separate inner-districts and each district offers a distinctively different living experience. Find out more about the location that you may be interested in living in.

DISTRICT 1 - Central Business District/Main Tourist Area

District 1 is the financial, commercial, and administrative center of Ho Chi Minh City. Here's where you'll find the greatest variety of lodgings, including classic hotels like the Grand, the Majestic and the Rex, as well as most of the newer, upscale hostelries. In recent years a lot of new hotel projects have been going up, creating a temporary glut, particularly in the high end of the market.
In District 1, you'll also find many museums, historical sites, and good restaurants. Most of the action takes place in District 1; not only is it home to the majority of tourist attractions and services, but it also contains the city’s burgeoning commercial scene.
On its western side, the area between Ph?m Ngu Lão and Bùi Vi?n is popular with budget travelers and backpackers for its cheap accommodations and food. Expatriates and luxury travelers tend to congregate near the city’s five-star hotel plazas in the east, between Ð?ng Kh?i and Tôn Ð?c Th?ng.

DISTRICT 2 - Expatriate Residences Cluster

District 2 is situated in one of the most attractive and interesting site in Ho Chi Minh City. District 2 has the rare advantage of close proximity to the city business center and at the same time a secluded natural environment with uninterrupted views to the Saigon River and to the old Ho Chi Minh City.
District 2 consists of 11 wards: An Phu, Thao Dien, An Khanh, Binh Khanh, Binh An, Thu Thiem, An Loi Dong, Binh Trung Tay, Binh Trung Dong, Cat Lai and Thanh My Loi. Thao Dien is a world-class area located at a short drive from downtown Saigon offering high quality residential apartments/villa, commercial offices, retails shopping and cosmopolitan restaurants - all in one central location.
District 2 has attract more customers to this area by reform in infrastructure with a series of projects with key countries such as Thu Thiem tunnels running through the Saigon River District 1 and District 2 connector, airport Cat Lai, Phu My bridge and highways .
District 2 also has a remarkable advantage compared with other districts of Ho Chi Minh City is thanks to the Saigon River horizontal bending. As a result, people here will enjoy not only the environment but also good in the recreational activities high on the river as yachting, sightseeing.

DISTRICT 3 - Extension of CBD

District 3 is considered by many Vietnamese people to be the ideal place to live , with large, old colonial villas hidden behind trees, great proximity to District 1 and a decent quality of life. It is less 'westernised' than District 1, but compared to much of central Saigon is a very peaceful place with lots of local places to eat.
One popular Vietnamese expression states you should go out in District 1, eat in District 5 but sleep in District 3. It certainly has many beautiful buildings but many have been adopted by the government while others are in varying states of repair - for villas in good condition expect to pay a rather high rent, but there are also plenty of townhouses in the area too.

DISTRICT 4

District 4 used to be known as the 'mafia district' - housing Saigon's main port and many of the city's poor gave plenty of opportunity for crime. This seems to be a thing of the past, and improving transport links to District 1 has seen a recent bump in land prices as more and more apartment blocks for executives are built - in some places a commute into Downtown District 1 might only take 5 minutes, and rents are much cheaper than District 1.
The Saigon port is set to close in years to come and the whole area is due for redevelopment - perhaps in coming years it will have a similar amount of restaurants and shops to District 1, but for now it is more of a throughfare between Districts 1 and 7.

DISTRICT 5

District 5 is a good choice for those seeking proximity to District 1 - commutes range from 10 - 20 minutes, with lower congestion than some routes into the city, but with lower rents. District 5 is famed for its street food, and its history as the city's Chinatown means there is a fair mix of cuisines in the area.

DISTRICT 7 - Phu My Hung

Phu My Hung is a city within a city.
This small modern city is a residential area consisting mostly of Asian expats, however, more westerners are finding District 7 to be an attractive place to reside. Phu My Hung offers more parks, walking areas and cleaner air quality than any other district in HCMC. The city was well planned with high quality infrastructures allowing the roads to be less congested.
Phu My Hung offers many convenience stores, fine dining restaurants, malls, health spas, and even a 9-hole executive golf course. It is also an ideal place for families because it offers many international schools as well an international university.
Phu My Hung offers many newly developed townhomes and villas. Many villas are located in compounds with security gates. Most villas and townhomes consist of 4+ bedrooms with private balconies and terraces.

District 10

District 10 is traditionally where many of Saigon's student population live, with great, cheap options for food and good, low rents.
The area is very densely populated though and has quite narrow streets so traffic in and out of the centre can be a pain, but as the crow flies it is not far to the downtown area. The area is also rich in amenities, with lots of swimming pools and sports centres to suit the student population, as well as a good number of coffeeshops.

Phu Nhuan District

Phu Nhuan is one of the most densely populated areas of Saigon and has a number of main roads running through it. The area is certainly not without its charms with a number of parks and interesting streetlife, but traffic to and from the centre can get pretty tiresome quickly.
Still, if you work in the E Town area in Tan Binh, or anywhere near the airport, living in Phu Nhuan can be a good option to be near work yet not too far from social activites in town.

Binh Thanh District

Binh Than is squeezed between District 1 and District 2, and is known for cheap housing that is popular among English teachers on low wages. However the area has seen near constant roadworks for over 3 years, and is the primary point of entry for hundreds of HGV trucks that pour into the city every night.
It is also very prone to flooding, even on the main roads, making driving around at night a fairly scary prospect and offering very low air quality, with dust from construction and trucks mingling with diesel fumes.
